Those tiny fabric balls are called pills, and they're why a favourite sweater suddenly looks tired. The good news: pilling is cosmetic and completely fixable.
What causes pilling
Friction. Short fibres on the fabric surface tangle where things rub — underarms, cuffs, where a bag strap sits. Softer fibres like cashmere and merino pill more easily than tough ones.
How to remove it safely
- Use a dedicated fabric shaver or a fine pilling comb — never scissors.
- Lay the garment flat and work gently in one direction.
- Go slow on delicate knits to avoid creating holes.
How to prevent it
Turn knits inside-out before washing, use a gentle cycle, and fold rather than hang. Avoid washing soft knits with rough fabrics like denim and towels.
LoomLift's lint & pilling service brings woolens and cashmere back to near-new, fast.
